How to be Happy 2!

How to be happy

Thanks for all the correspondence relating to last month’s issue.  It seems I am not the only one who is seeking to undo years of conditioning about enjoyment only being allowed when all the work is done!

We went to supper with some friends who receive the newsletter shortly after it came out, and our hostess decided she would like the evening’s conversational theme to be happiness.  We had an enjoyable and lively evening, but I think we were all surprised by how often the talk strayed back onto problems and things that make us unhappy!

This brings to mind the NLP principle of ‘moving towards’ or ‘moving away from’.  A person with the former attitude is motivated by the achievement of things which make them happy.  A ‘moving away’ person is more motivated by getting away from things they dislike.  So the former will say they go on holiday to relax in beautiful surroundings and enjoy good food and wine.  The latter will tell you they want to get away from the stress of work and the bad British weather.

It is estimated that as children we are told not to do something 30,000 times a year, so it’s hardly surprising that as adults we are still in ‘moving away’ mode.  But who would you rather be, the person dreaming of relaxing under sunny skies or the one brooding on traffic jams?

The newsletter has been receiving some plaudits and an increasing number of new subscribers lately, so it is high time I introduced my co-director Judy Heminsley, who has been working with me on the administration and marketing of the business for the past year.

She takes my ideas, adds her own, and turns them into the newsletters for which so far I have been taking the credit!

Visit her web site on the city of Bath England to experience some more of her writing style.
