How to be Happy 4!

Thank you for your ideas on how to lift your mood and make your working and personal lives happier.  Here are a few suggestions:

1.  Do you have a purpose in life?  A Dutch study examined the aspirations of two groups of students, one business students and the other trainee teachers.  The business students’ aim was to make money, while the teachers were more concerned with helping their pupils.  The study found that the teachers, although earning less, ended up happier than the business students.

Katherine Talley wrote to say that her religious beliefs help her to get back on track during bad days – having a deeper meaning to life than simply making money to pay the bills adds a whole new dimension.

2.  Take a break – get out of the office at lunchtime or when there is a natural break in your work, and have a walk, go swimming or visit the gym.  Make a point of looking around you and concentrate on your body moving rather than thinking about work.

3.  Reward yourself for what you have accomplished – have a coffee break after completing a demanding piece of work, go out to lunch with a friend if you are having a difficult day.  Or try just leaving something you are struggling with, as mentioned in a previous newsletter, do something more pleasant and come back to it later.

4.  Face up to problems or sources of worry.  Trying to push down a persistent niggle is exhausting and debilitating.  It takes courage to face it, acknowledge it is a problem and start to tackle it, but it will give instantly improve your confidence and self esteem.

5.  Qamar Zaidi suggests thinking about how you can make others happy, which is a great suggestion and also stops too much introspection and self-absorption!
