How to be Happy 5

I have recently undertaken a qualification in Hypnotherapy with my NLP Master Practitioner trainer and have been practising with some pleasing results. Last week I worked with a cabling engineer who spends a lot of time in lofts and other dusty places.  Not easy when you are claustrophobic and hate spiders!

I received this e-mail from his partner a few days later: ‘Just to let you know that A has been working in several lofts this week and has felt extremely calm about being in there.  He has had spider’s webs across his face and has been OK about it, so all in all, a great result!’

I mention it here as it fits in nicely with our theme of how to be happy – hypnosis can work amazingly well to help make positive changes in our lives.  It helps those who want to lose weight, give up smoking or lead a more healthy lifestyle.  It can cure phobias such as fear of flying, fear of public speaking and arachnophobia (fear of spiders).

Unfortunately hypnotherapy has suffered from its association in the mind of the public with stage hypnotists, who seek to entertain by inducing volunteers to make themselves look silly by clucking like a chicken etc.

The first thing to say is that nobody can ever be persuaded to do anything under hypnosis that they wouldn’t normally do!  Those volunteers are probably raging extroverts who relish the spotlight and enjoy playing the fool!

Hypnosis works by first placing the subject into a highly relaxed (and very pleasant!) state, and then introducing into their unconscious mind the desired outcome or behaviour.

In this way the unconscious is working alongside the conscious mind, whereas before there may have been conflict, which results in the self-sabotaging behaviour we are all familiar with!  We want to lose weight but find ourselves bingeing on all the wrong foods, we want to get fit, but end up staying at home watching TV rather than going to the gym as planned.

Hypnosis makes the change less effortful – we are dealing with the issue unconsciously and so it doesn’t feel as though we have to force ourselves to behave in the way we want.  It helps us make friends with our unconscious, achieve our goals and thus live a happier life!
