Hypnotherapy and Hypnosis Myths and Legends

The latest addition to my portfolio is hypnotherapy and since getting my qualification last year I have been working with a steady stream of clients.

I have been thrilled with the results but I have also learnt that some people have a strong negative attitude towards hypnotherapy!  Even my mother, on hearing about my training, immediately responded “Oh, I wouldn’t want to be hypnotised!”

I think stage hypnotism has a lot to answer for.  It’s probably the only form of hypnotism a lot of people have heard of, and obviously they are suspicious of being made to look silly.

Then there are the urban myths – heard the one about the woman was told by a stage hypnotist that she was a beaver?  She went home with her husband and all seemed well until the next morning, when she went missing, only to be found down on the riverbank!

That’s just one of the myths – the reality is that hypnotherapy is a powerful tool to help people make positive changes in their lives.  Ask one of my clients who has overcome a fear of spiders, or the one able to go to the dentist for the first time in many years, and I think they will agree.

Did you know that hypnotherapy is the second-best way to give up smoking?  The best way is to have a heart attack – pretty strong motivation but not to be recommended!  The West Midlands police seem convinced.  They have decided to use hypnotherapy to help the smokers in their employment to give up.

The ban on smoking in public places comes into effect on 1 July and both employers and employees will be fined if the law is not observed.  With this in mind I have devised a new workshop to help people look at why they smoke and how they can decide to become a non-smoker.  Please get in touch if I can help your workplace to become smoke-free or if you have any comments or questions about hypnotherapy.
