The Apprentice - Can it Teach us About What Makes a Good Leader

One evening last week we were in need of some undemanding television and the only thing worth watching in this four-channel household was ‘The Apprentice’, the show in which 16 hopefuls compete for the approval of Sir Alan Sugar and the chance to earn a six-figure salary in his organisation.

Not having watched the show since its introduction to the UK a few years ago, we were struck by how outdated the claims of the contestants sounded, along the lines of ‘I always succeed’, ‘I’m going to get to the top’, ‘I came here to win’ etc.  They seem to believe that ruthless is good, an attitude that is obviously encouraged by some of Sir Alan’s brasher statements.

And yet he also emphasised the importance of teamwork and he must be good at this, his henchmen on the show having worked with him for many years.  But one project leader constantly talked over her team members and when one expressed a differing opinion, simply repeated, in ever louder tones, ‘I haven’t finished yet’ and ‘Please be quiet’.

It seems that leadership remains an elusive quality and one that is widely misunderstood.  Old habits of coercion continue to be followed by many, and those who want something different are not sure of their ground.

In these times of stress and upheaval we need good leaders more than ever.  Who do you see as a leader you can use as a role model?  Have you spotted anyone you think is emerging as a leader?

Newsflash:

We are thrilled to announce that Judy’s book about working from home has found a publisher.  She will now be nose to the computer for the rest of the summer in order to finish it by September.  Publication will be early next year and we will keep you updated!
